What does it mean to be a Democrat?

For too long, we've let the GOP define Democrats in their own terms. It's time for us to take the initiative and show Georgia voters what we're about. The best way to start the effort is to get Democrats on a unified message, and that unified message should start with a frank and open discussion among Democrats about what being a Democrat means.

This is where that discussion starts. Please share your vision of what it means to be a Democrat in the comments below.

The Great American Movement from an Extreme America platform by the leaders of this failed Administration has opened the door to new ideas and traditional values. I believe that as Georgia Democrats, that we too must focus on the core issues of what is means to be an American, What it means to be a Georgian, and finally what it means to be a Georgia Democrat.. at the core level.

Thusly so, I will take a small excerpt from the 2004 Platform of the DNC which I believe addresses those core issues, and then add my vision for Georgia Dems.

What does it mean to be a Georgia Democrat?

It means that...

..We affirm our faith in the greatness of America. We recommit to the ideal of a people united in helping one another, an ideal as old as the faiths we follow and as great as the country we love. To those who are threatened, we pledge protection; to those who are victims, we promise justice; to those who are hopeless, we offer hope. And to all Americans who seek a better future for
themselves, for their loved ones, and for our country, we say: your cause is our own. That is the America we believe in. That is the America we are fighting for. That is the America we will build together – one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. And furthermore, we shall seek to create economic as well as civil justice for all Georgians. We will not be afraid of truth, and be loyal to our constitution. We will refresh those who draw weary from the heat of oppression with the support guaranteed by the bill of rights. We will repel those who seek to circumvent or alter those rights for their own interests; and ensure that as a working, agricultural and growing globally economic society, that America and Georgia always come first.

This is the America that must prevail, this is for the Georgia that must commit to retain it's glory and promise for all citizens who are so entitled to those inalienable rights.
